One dead, one injured in wild elephant attack
KUNMING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- A villager died and another injured after being attacked by a wild elephant in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said Saturday.
The tragedy occurred on Friday morning in Mengla County, Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, when a woman was working at her vegetable plot, according to the statement released by the county's publicity department.
She died at the site after she was attacked by an elephant that intruded into the village. The elephant injured another villager and damaged several houses as it fled.
In recent years, there have been frequent reports of attacks by wild elephants causing casualties and property losses in Yunnan.
Yunnan has purchased commercial insurance for people in some regions. The government pays the premiums, and the insurers compensate people when animals cause trouble.
Wild Asian elephants are placed under top state protection in China, with a population of about 300, mainly scattered in Xishuangbanna, Pu'er and Lincang in Yunnan

Drones used to protect Yunnan residents from wild elephants
Police and forestry workers are using drones to monitor the activities of a wild elephant that has attacked several vehicles in Menghai county, Yunnan province.
The adult elephant smashed the front window of a bus and pushed a car off the road at the weekend, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Tuesday. No deaths or injuries were reported.
On Saturday, the bus broke down and the driver insisted on staying in the vehicle, despite warnings from the forestry bureau, a source was quoted as saying in the report.
At 6 pm, the wild elephant approached the bus, looked inside, and hit the window with its head, according to the source. The driver was unhurt.
On Sunday morning, the elephant pushed a car off the road, the report added.
Wang Tongxing, deputy director of the Menghai public security bureau, attributed the incidents to the migration season.
According to Chen Mingyong, a professor in Yunnan University’s Life Sciences Department who has studied Asian elephants for years, wild elephants usually migrate between November and April when food is scarce.
“They chase down food, wander around, and don’t have a home,” he said.
There is also a group of 16 elephants and one lone elephant in neighboring Lancang county, according to the forestry authority.
At present, drones are being used to conduct real-time monitoring of all 18 elephants 24 hours a day. Sections of road will be cordoned off if elephants are found there.
“If the elephants get close to villages, alerts will be sent to the villagers,” Chen said. “People should also avoid provoking the elephants, who may be aggressive if they are scared.”

Chinese village builds barricades to fend off marauding wild elephants
Villagers in southwest China who have been plagued for years by rampaging wild elephants looking for food have welcomed a scheme to build a barrier to protect them.
The pilot project to build an enclosure round Xiangyanqing in Yunnan province has been judged so successful that it will now be expanded to other villages in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, state television reported on Thursday.
Residents reported a dozen incidents in which elephants were kept out of the village in just over a month, Guo Xianming, director of the Asian elephants protection project in Xishuangbanna, told CCTV.
The reserve hosts most of the country’s wild Asian elephants, which number between 200 and 300, according to a study published by the country’s Institute of Zoology.
The village introduced the barriers recently to cope with attacks from the wild elephants which came looking for sugar cane and banana leaves and would eat their grain and destroy electric appliances in their houses, villager Feng Guanglin told the broadcaster.
